Atlantic Beach, NC

Sure there may be four other Atlantic Beaches in the country, and they are all located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. But only one of them is located in one of the best states for outdoor enthusiasts: North Carolina.

If you’ve never experienced North Carolina, give the Tar Heel State an opportunity to wow you! Whether you go west to the Blue Ridge Mountains, or venture east to the shoreline, your family is bound to have the adventure of a lifetime. Families who enjoy fishing typically head to the coast, as the fishing is out of this world! You’ve got inshore possibilities in the several sounds and Intracoastal Waterways, as well as the bountiful Atlantic Ocean.

To get the most of your visit, consider visiting Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. It’s located on the tip of Bogue Inlet, and anglers can choose between fishing Bogue Sound, Bogue Inlet, or the Atlantic Ocean. The non-anglers in your group will also have a great time, playing in the sand & sun. There are also a lot of great shops and restaurants for your group to visit. Or check out one of the many nature parks in the area. Stay a few days and truly soak in everything this Atlantic Beach has to offer!

Atlantic Beach Inshore Fishing

Come get your trophy fish in the bountiful waters near Atlantic Beach. Inshore and nearshore opportunities are waiting for you in the surrounding waters. And you don’t have to go very far to get to the fish. Atlantic Beach is located at the end of the barrier island, and has world-class fisheries practically on all sides.

During the summer months, flounder is one of the area’s highly targeted species. Flounder are flatfish that camouflage themselves along the bottom, hiding from predators and prey. Fish the reefs near Trawler Buoy and surrounding areas. We also recommend using live baits such as shrimp or small baitfish. Once you feel a hit on the line, wait just a beat before setting the hook. Flounder often like to fool anglers before spitting the hook; there are many fish stories about “the one that got away” when it comes to flounder fishing.

Spanish Mackerel (or simply “macks”) are another popular fish to target near Atlantic Beach. These are long, thin, silver fish with yellowish dots along the back. Spanish Macks typically grow to about five or six pounds, and are a great fish for new or young anglers. As a predatory fish, they like live bait or flashy artificials, usually retrieved a bit faster. You can fish the Intracoastal Waterway or head to a local pier to catch this species.

Speaking of local piers, the Oceanana Pier is the only public pier on the Atlantic Ocean side of the city. It stretches 1,000 feet into the ocean and anglers can spend hours reeling in plenty of keepers. Even if you’re not fishing, take a stroll along the pier and enjoy the views; time it just right and you’ll get to see a beautiful sunset. There is a small fee to fish the pier with multi-day passes available and discounts for children. The pier is open 365 days of the year with a bait house that sells or rents any gear or tackle needed; refreshments are also sold here. Spanish Mackerel, trout, flounder, tarpon, redfish, and sheepshead are just a few examples of what can be caught from the pier.

Deep Sea Fishing Near Atlantic Beach

Trophy sized fish don’t just swim in the inshore waters, head out to the Atlantic for some of the best sportfishing in the world. North Carolina anglers have easy access to the Gulf Stream, a nutrient rich water current of good fishing from the Gulf of Mexico to Iceland. It’s just a short ride from Atlantic Beach to catch coveted pelagic species such as mahi mahi, tuna, and marlin. If you’re deep sea fishing in the winter months, get your arms ready to battle giant sized blue tuna. It’s one of the many reasons anglers love fishing this area year after year.

If you’re deep sea fishing in the summer, try your hand at bottom fishing for grouper, snapper, or amberjack. Your captain will have all the gear required and can teach you the techniques needed to pull the fish up. Whether you’re trolling or jigging, you’re sure to have a fun day on the water and can bring home a cooler full of fish for your next delicious fish dinner.
