About Fishing in Bahamas

Bahamas

Imagine waters that are so crystal clear you can see schools of fish swimming by. When you visit the Bahamas, you won’t have to imagine it. The world’s clearest waters are only found off the coast of the islands of the Bahamas. That’s right: islands. Did you know there are about 700 islands that make up the Commonwealth of the Bahamas? It’s an archipelago that stretches across 100,000 square miles in the Atlantic Ocean. You may be familiar with Nassau, the capital and popular cruise port located on the island of New Providence. Freeport is another favorite vacation destination. It’s located on the island of Grand Bahama in the northwest corner of the archipelago. In 2019 Hurricane Dorian caused horrific damage to many of the islands, but they are quickly rebuilding and many cities are welcoming visitors again. When you do visit, plan on reserving a fishing charter. Missing an opportunity to fish all that water is a travesty. Okay, that may be a bit harsh. But you really don’t want to miss out on a fishing excursion when it comes to the Bahamas. There’s just too much goodness going on in the nearby waters, and we have no doubt that your group will have a fantastic time!

Fishing Near the Bahamas

Remember those crystal clear waters we mentioned earlier? They are filled with a variety of snappers, groupers, bonefish, tarpon, permit, and even sharks. And you don’t need any fishing skills or previous experience to get in on the action. Local Bahamian guides will have all the required gear and can teach you everything you need to know for a successful day of reeling in trophies. Anglers who enjoy fly fishing will absolutely love a visit to the Bahamas. It’s one of the premier fly fishing locations in the world. There are miles and miles of flats fishing opportunities for anglers who prefer fly fishing. The prized trophy in this area is without a doubt bonefish. Also known as gray ghosts, bonefish operate in stealth and speed. They are slender with silver or gray coloring and average around 5 pounds. Flats fishing in the Bahamas is a year-round opportunity. And the good news: there’s plenty of places throughout the islands to find great fishing grounds. Green Turtle Cay is one of our favorite places to track bonefish. Or visit FishAnywhere.com and charter with Andros Island Bonefish Club. If you’re looking for remote fishing grounds, you can’t go wrong near Crooked Island and Acklins, located on the southeast corner of the islands. Other favorite fishing excursions include nearshore charters for snapper or grouper. Of course, we can’t neglect to mention the Nassau grouper, named after the large population found in the area. They live near reefs and feed on fish and crab. We recommend catch-and-release whenever possible.

Bahamas Deep Sea Fishing Charters

Moving into the deep blue sea there’s more adventure to be found. Bahama charters target pelagic species such as tuna, mahi mahi, and marlin. Tuna and mahi mahi are generally found in the same areas at the same time. Usually, when you see one species you’ll find the other. Tuna species are bluefin and yellowfin, both fast swimming and aggressive fighters. Marlin in the area are blue marlin and white marlin. Watching a marlin explode out of the water is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. You definitely want to have the cameras out when you’re fishing for marlin. Captains typically go trolling for these pelagic species. This is a technique that includes driving the vessel across an area with several lines in the water. Bait is situated at different depths to entice the trophy to the line. Once you hear the drag scream, get ready to reel in your catch. Bahama fishing trips are typically a minimum of six hours, or they can last a few days depending on the vessel and charter. The charter captain will have all the fishing gear you need, just remember to pack sunscreen, bottles of water, and any seasickness medication. Polarized sunglasses are also good investments. These types of sunglasses have specialized lenses that help cut through the sun’s rays and any glare off the water.
