About Fishing in Dauphin Island

Dauphin Island Fishing Charters

“Getting away from it all” couldn’t have a better poster child than Dauphin Island, Alabama. The small Gulf Coast Island is about 30 miles south of Mobile and consists of long stretches of white beaches, a load of history, and wildlife and fisheries resources to make anybody happy. At the entrance to the massive Mobile Bay, old remains of the 19th century Fort Gaines still stand and draw visitors to see the original cannons, a blacksmith shop and more. Migrating birds flock to the forest and dunes of the Audubon Bird Sanctuary and aquariums, and a living marsh boardwalk at the Sea Lab Estuarium put folks right at Mother Nature’s front door. And then, there’s fishing. The Gulf of Mexico and the Mobile Bay are excellent fishing grounds and there are numerous seasoned and well-prepared guides to take you out for a day of fun and collecting dinner. Some of the exciting species that you can catch on Dauphin Island either by surf fishing or taking a charter trip include Amberjack, Atlantic Croaker, Bluefish, Catfish, Cobia, Jack Crevalle, Dolphinfish, Drum, Flounder, Groupers, Kingfish, Ladyfish, Mackerel, Pompano, Redfish, Seatrout, Sharks, Sheepshead, Snappers, Tarpon, Tripletail, Tuna, and Wahoo. Dauphin Island is extremely popular due to its proximity to Mobile and it’s easily reached from any direction.

Dauphin Island Inshore Fishing

You don’t even have to own or rent a boat to enjoy a leisurely day of fishing at Dauphin Island. The island is full of ideal surf fishing spots, especially on the western end. That end of the Island is completely undeveloped, with several areas that are perfect for surf fishing and wade fishing. The easiest access is to take Bienville Boulevard right out to the shore. On the eastern side of the Island, the pier at Billy Goat Hole and several spots along the beaches, or from the jetties are good spots. But if you are really serious about catching a good number of fish, a guided trip is what you need. Inshore trips focus on redfish, speckled trout and sheepshead in the early months of the year with black drum coming in as the water warms. By spring, the redfish and specks are still biting, but make way for some fantastic Spanish mackerel fishing and cobia as well. Cobia are strong fighters and easy to find near structure. Amberjack also start to enter the picture. The inshore fishing wanes a bit in the summer, but you don’t have to go far out from the bay to find snapper, grouper and other species. Summer brings an unusual amount of really good tarpon fishing and as fall rolls around, flounder and pompano join the menu for inshore anglers. And the redfish and speck fishing remains good all through the fall and winter.

Dauphin Island Offshore Fishing

You can take just about any kind of deep sea fishing trip you can imagine out of Dauphin Island. Charter options start with quick 4 or 5 hour trips staying within Alabama state waters and go all the way up to 12 hours, or even longer in special situations, taking you as far as 40 miles off the coast for some fun chasing the really big ones. Either way, it is sure to be an adventure on the water you won’t soon forget. The longer the trip, the more species and better chances of getting a big one are afforded anglers. Usually on long trips, the boat captain may decide to troll on the way out and back in to help load up with a good stash of fish for customers. The summer, which offers a limited snapper season allowing anglers to keep their catch, is extremely popular and books up fast here. Deep dropping is one technique used here. It involves going out over reefs and around man-made structures to drop baits deep into the Gulf and pull out giant amberjack, dolphin, grouper and tuna are offered on the longer trips.
