About Fishing in Kitty Hawk

Kitty Hawk, North Carolina

You may recognize Kitty Hawk as the destination of the first manned flight experiment. The Wright Brothers National Memorial is located here, and allows locals and visitors alike to take a stroll down memory lane of aviation. But there’s more to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina than what’s in the sky. Dip your head down a few degrees and see all the water surrounding the city. The fact that it’s on a barrier island helps, there’s literally water on either side. As part of the famous Outer Banks, Kitty Hawk sees its fair share of vacationers looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and put their feet up for a while. There’s a certain vibe found in the Outer Banks, and it’s usually dressed in flip flops and tank tops. To get a real Kitty Hawk experience, consider adding a fishing trip to your itinerary. You can fish from the nearby pier, the shore, or hire a local charter company - all great options when you’re looking for a fishing trip near Kitty Hawk.

Fishing Near Kitty Hawk

If you’re on the Atlantic side of Kitty Hawk and looking to do some fishing without a boat, you can either fish from the shore (also known as surf fishing), or head to the Kitty Hawk Pier. The building part of the pier is owned by a local hotel, but the fishing portion is still open to the public when a pass is purchased. If you choose to surf fish, make sure you head to the part of the beach that is not crowded with sunbathers and swimmers. You’ll need a saltwater fishing license when surf fishing; a license is not required when fishing from the pier. On the west side of town, anglers have access to some incredible inshore fishing opportunities in the Albemarle Sound, Currituck Sound, and Kitty Hawk Bay. Again, there are some public places where anglers can fish from the shore, but to really get to the action we recommend hiring a local charter. They can take you to the honey holes and make sure you’re catching fish. Two popular inshore fish caught near Kitty Hawk include redfish and trout. Redfish (also known as red drum or puppy drum) are bronze and golden colored with a distinct black dot or dots near the tail. Trout are either called spotted seatrout or speckled trout, and are a slim, silver fish with several black dots along the back. While they are very different fish, they tend to eat in the same areas on the same things. Bait your hook with shrimp, crab, menhaden, or mullet, cast near the grass beds, and wait for the tug of the line. Add a popping cork to help get the attention of nearby predators. Whichever you find at the end of the line, we know you’ll have a smile just as big! Crabbing in the Albemarle Sound is another great option. Many local captains will drop a few crab pots on the way out to the fishing grounds, then at the end of the day pick up the pots to see what they’ve got. Your family can look forward to a delicious crab dinner after your day of fishing.

Kitty Hawk Deep Sea Fishing

Like other Outer Banks cities, Kitty Hawk has quick access to the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean, making it a fantastic starting point for your deep sea adventure. The Gulf Stream is just a short drive away and is filled with monster sized fish feeding on smaller fish, who are feeding on plankton. A real-life circle of life, the Gulf Stream is a current of water running from Florida to Iceland, and is just a short drive from the North Carolina barrier islands. If you’re visiting Kitty Hawk during the winter months, bluefin tuna will be waiting for you. This is the perfect time to schedule your trip, and local captains will have the boat rigged to reel in the giant-sized tuna. Plan for a full day on the water, a minimum of six hours, but eight or ten are better to get to the fishing grounds, find the fish, and then spend an hour or so reeling in your trophy. During the summer months, mahi mahi are running in good numbers in the Gulf Stream. Also known as dolphin and dorado, mahi mahi are a bright yellow, green, and blue colored fish. They are fast swimmers that enjoy feeding on shiny fish. Captains will typically go trolling for mahi mahi, with several lines in the water baited with ballyhoo, sardines, or artificials. Other species that you can encounter on your deep sea fishing excursion include wahoo, king mackerel, marlin, shark, and more.
