About Fishing in Ocean City

Ocean City, Maryland

Visit Ocean City, Maryland and witness some of the most beautiful sunrises on the East Coast! While visiting this resort city, you’ll fall in love with local fishing opportunities as well. Your non-angling family members will also enjoy the local attractions, restaurants, and shops. Overall, it’s a great place for a family vacation. The beach and the boardwalk are two favorite attractions for Ocean City visitors. The 3-mile Ocean City Boardwalk is open 24/7, 365 days of the year. There are tons of shops and restaurants along the boardwalk, perfect for stopping for a bit and enjoying a nice cold beverage. During the off-season (October to April) dogs are allowed on the boardwalk, and there’s typically events hosted by the city throughout the year. Anglers fishing the area have several options for dropping a line. If you don’t have a vessel, consider fishing from the Oceanic Fishing Pier or the Route 50 bridge. You can also surf fish as long as the beach isn’t crowded. Or hire a local fishing charter to take your family out for an amazing fishing adventure. Whatever you decide, you’re headed for a great day of some Ocean City fishing!

Ocean City Inshore Fishing

One of the benefits of fishing Ocean City is the variety of options. The city is on a barrier island off the coast of Maryland, giving anglers the opportunity to fish the bay systems to the west or the Atlantic Ocean to the east. One of our favorite fishing spots is actually at the southern tip of the island at Ocean City Inlet. Be careful near the jetties, especially as the tides move in and out throughout the day. Time your visit just right and you can see some really great action on trout and bluefish. Fishing from the pier is also another great option for those without a vessel. And the good news is: the Oceanic Fishing Pier covers your license, so you can just grab your gear and drop a line. During peak season (from May to September) the pier is open 24/7, allowing anglers the opportunity to fish “under the lights.” Looking for some striped bass? The pier is a great way to get hooked on this popular species. Or fish for flounder, trout, croaker, black drum, and more. The Route 50 bridge is another spot for some really great rod-bending action. If you have new or younger anglers in your group, consider fishing the bay systems to the west of the island. Here you’ll find Isle of Wight Bay and Assawoman Bay, both located on the shores of Ocean City. The shallow waters of both bays are typically calmer than the ocean, and groups will hit their limit in no time. You can have a productive trip in about four hours without breaking the bank. Popular inshore species include flounder, trout, and striped bass (known locally as rockfish). Anglers can target these species in the nearby bays, off the pier, or near the jetties. Fishing is available year-round, and with a local guide your group is sure to have a productive day.

Ocean City Offshore Fishing

For adrenaline-pumping adventures, head out to the Atlantic Ocean for some incredible deep sea fishing opportunities. Your group can bottom fish for snapper or grouper, or try your hand at catching fast-moving pelagic predators such as marlin, tuna, and mahi mahi. White marlin are a popular fish in the area, with a yearly tournament targeting this species held here each summer. Some consider Ocean City the “White Marlin Capital of the World.” During the spring and summer months this incredible species starts showing up in good numbers. White marlin is part of the billfish family and is considered an excellent gamefish. Anglers will troll for marlin with several lines in the water, typically using ballyhoo or other shiny fish as bait. Once on the hook, white marlin are known for putting up an excellent fight, jumping and thrashing to toss the hook. Shark fishing is another popular trip for Ocean City anglers. Throughout the year anglers will travel anywhere from 5 to 30 miles out to target blue sharks, tiger sharks, mako sharks, hammerhead sharks, and more. If you’re planning a shark fishing trip, keep in mind that other fish typically steer clear when a shark is near. You won’t be getting a mixed bag of species when fishing for sharks, unless you travel to another location.
