About Fishing in Topsail Beach

Topsail Beach, North Carolina

With a population of around 400, Topsail Beach, North Carolina barely qualifies as a town. But when the fun starts and the fishing gets good, there is plenty of company for the residents of this Pender County town that is also part of the Wilmington Metropolitan area. Locally pronounced “ Tops’l ”, this area is named after just what you probably imagined — the tops of sails. But not just any sails. Way back in the1700’s pirates used to hang out in the river channel here and bushwhack passing ships. Finally folks caught on and started watching for the tops of the sails of the pirates boats hiding behind the island so they’d be ready. The island is about 37 miles long and is located almost in the middle of the stretch that includes the Crystal Coast and the beaches of Cape Fear. Speaking of being ready, today you don’t have to worry about pirates, but you better be ready for some fantastic fishing and beach fun in this little town. The island was originally available by boat only and a popular spot for picnicking and hunting for Blackbeard’s buried treasure. But today, visitors like to lay on the sands more than dig in them. Visitors will see several large concrete observation towers on the island that house businesses and residences. Those were originally part of the complex operated by the Army where experimental rockets were stored and fired. More than 200 rocket launches were reported to have taken place on the island, which was incorporated in 1963. The Missiles and More Museum retells that history here. The newest improvement to Topsail Beach is the fantastic Surf City Bridge, a new 65-foot-high, $53 million project across Waters Bay which allows vehicles to go to and from the island without waiting for the bridge to be opened for boat traffic. The bridge also has popular bike lanes that allow visitors to enjoy the panoramic view of the area.

Topsail Beach Inshore Fishing

When it comes to fishing, a quick look at the map shows you that 90 percent of the Topsail area is water, the ocean to the east and an immense bay, cuts and river systems to the west. There is water, water everywhere to fish and yes, still plenty to drink at the island’s attractions and accommodations. Fishermen and women here can expect to hook into redfish, Spanish mackerel, black drum, albacore, bluefish, flounder and tasty speckled trout. The bridges to the main island and numerous islands, including the large Permuda Island Reserve, offer great inshore fishing. Permuda Island is about 2 miles in length and is a popular area for kayak and canoe enthusiasts. Everett Bay and Stumps Island are popular spots on the north end as is Dixon Point on the south end. There are also striped bass, croaker and the like. There are lots of places for fish to hide here, so a guide can help put you on the fish and what they are biting without wasting any time. That’s always a good choice. The fishing can range from brackish pools to mud flats and winding estuary creeks.

Topsail Beach Offshore Fishing

When you head offshore, not only is it a beautiful sight to watch land disappear behind you, it’s also an adventure that lies ahead — chasing big fish in the warm Gulf Stream waters. Those fish are abundant and include tarpon, sheepshead, flounder, tarpon, amberjack, white marlin, blue marlin, wahoo, dolphin and sailfish. When you know what time of the year you are coming, check with the charter captain of your choice to make sure they customize your trip for your pleasure. You can go for numbers or for big fish — or both. Just make a good plan and make a reservation. There is also a great fishing pier on Topsail that can provide some good catches and a chance to tune up your fishing game before you begin your big trips. The Surf City Ocean Pier is a great family fishing experience.

Book a Topsail Beach Fishing Charter

Small and with a slow-paced life ethic, this area is a great place to just come enjoy nature, relax and take in some fantastic fishing. Whether you go inshore into the bay and backwaters, or head out in the big blue Atlantic Ocean in search of fish that you could only imagine, this is a great spot. Make the most of it with a charter trip booked through FishAnywhere. The captains will be doing their best to put you on the fish, the right baits and the best time you can imagine. In fact, this is one of those places that two is better than one. Consider booking a trip inshore one day, then offshore the next. It’s two different worlds of fishing that are worth exploring.
